Gianni Infantino Receives Lot of Criticism and Also Suffered a Major Set-Back Following the Crash of Plans for 48 Team Tournament

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA was 1 of few advocates of the expansion plan of 48 teams for the 2022 World Cup which is to be held in Qatar and many of the observers say that the decision to drop the plan is nothing less than a tight slap in the face of Infantino.  The decision which was taken on last Wednesday by the community of FIFA to abandon the plan of the participation of 48 teams to let them compete in the global showcase in the time of 3 years was a major setback for Gianni, who is the head of FIFA since 2016.

The Swiss international had pushed the expansion plan really hard, contending that it would definitely expand the reach of the game of football across the world. Infantino was used to saying that “Of course it wouldn’t be a cakewalk, but if we can take the decision to play with 48 teams in the 2026 World Cup. Then why can’t we prepone it?” In the end, in spite of all his efforts, tactics and assessment regarding the increment in revenue with a larger tournament, his plan was outplayed by the harsh realities of global politics.
